Making pantstuit jokes on the day of Clinton’s concession? How fucking low can you get?
And thank you very much, Hillary Clinton. It was a good speech—her endorsement didn’t seem grudging, and she went out of her way to repeatedly say “We need to elect Barack Obama president,” then highlighted all the ways in which they are similar, all of which was clearly intended to drown out any dissenters in the crowd. Most politicians will just let the boos ride when they mention their opponents in concession speeches, so I think that’s pretty classy of her—she put party before self, like everyone’s been demanding she do for months. She talked about civil rights and equality, about history and hope. It was stirring. It was, I think, exactly what both the party and her supporters were looking for.
So now, first thing’s first: Let’s get a progressive in the White House. Then, let’s start getting more white women and men and women of color into public office at every level, so that when we look back we won’t just say that Barack Obama or Kathleen Sebelius (or whoever) was the first minority or woman president, but the first of many. Donate, write letters, give speeches, join marches, volunteer, vote.
